Tulkinnanvaraista is a concert series of new and experimental music, established in 2011 and currently on its sixth season. The series is directed by its founder, cellist and composer Juho Laitinen.

The activities focus on presenting experimental art music of our time as well as works from the historical avantgarde and modernism. Experimentalism is thought of as an artist’s practice to create new and previously unheard music by using methods of research. Thus Tulkinnanvaraista merges with a historical continuum represented in Europe by composers such as Anton Webern, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Salvatore Sciarrino and Jukka Tiensuu and in the USA by Charles Ives, John Cage, Alvin Lucier and others.

The series also brings to fore important solo, chamber and orchestral works from the last 100 years that are largely neglected in the mainstream musical culture. Many of the works are heard in Finland for the first time.

Tulkinnanvaraista elaborates the vision of its founder to create a non-hierarchical and communally shared artistic experience based on free association. Music brings together body, mind and spirit in an expression of aesthetic, philosophical and ethical elements. But overall it remains a beautiful mystery.
