  • Kannelmäki Church 11 Gamlasvägen Helsingfors, 00420 Finland (map)

Ryoan-ji ("Temple of the peaceful dragon”) is a Zen-Buddhist temple in Kyoto. The famous abstract rock garden established in the 15th century is intended to help in the contemplation of existence and lead towards enlightenment.

In John Cage’s interpretation the glissandi of wind instruments draw the outlines of the rocks in the garden. Repetitive percussive sounds are a reminder of the gravel that is raked the same way, every day.
